Greenwich's Art Deco town hall 'to become flats'

London, UKLocal News

Greenwich Council approved a redevelopment plan for Meridian House, a Grade II listed Art Deco building, to convert it into 73 residential units. Eleven of these units will be affordable, catering to a range of occupants from singles to families. Riverlow submitted the proposal in 2022, and the building has not been occupied since 2019. The redevelopment also includes plans to renovate the clock tower's observation deck, which has been closed to the public for over 50 years. A council spokesperson highlighted the goal of enhancing the surrounding area with flexible commercial spaces.

The project aims to meet local housing needs while contributing to a safer, more attractive neighborhood. Formal planning permission will only be granted once a legal agreement outlining community benefits is finalized. Meridian House's historical significance is underscored by its past as the borough's headquarters and its association with notable performances at the adjacent Borough Hall.
