Fire at University of Iowa dorm extinguished, but water damage briefly displaces students
A fire broke out in an unoccupied dorm room at Daum Residence Hall, University of Iowa, around 3:30 a. m. on November 6, prompting a response from the Iowa City Fire Department. The building's sprinkler system effectively contained the blaze, limiting damage to one room. Approximately 50 students were temporarily displaced due to water damage on the first and second floors.
University officials confirmed that no injuries occurred during the incident, and students were able to return to their rooms by the morning, except for those in the affected room. Assistant Vice President of Campus Safety Mark Bullock emphasized the importance of student safety and praised the quick response from first responders and hall staff. Daum Residence Hall, opened in 1964, houses 344 students, including honors program participants. The incident underscores the effectiveness of fire safety measures in residential buildings. University officials continue to monitor the situation and support displaced students.
