'Care for our neighbors' Reynolds urges Iowans to donate to food banks as SNAP funds end
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds urged residents to donate to local food banks as federal SNAP benefits are set to expire on November 1 due to the government shutdown. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services announced it will match donations to six regional food banks up to $1 million, starting November 1, to help meet the growing demand for food assistance. Food pantry leaders in Iowa have warned that the lapse in SNAP benefits will create unprecedented challenges, impacting over 260,000 residents who rely on the program each month. Reynolds highlighted that cash donations are more effective than food donations, as they allow food banks to purchase needed supplies. The Iowa National Guard will also assist with food distribution, similar to their role during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reynolds criticized Senate Democrats for delaying a clean funding bill, emphasizing the need for immediate government action to prevent further harm. Despite the challenges, she expressed confidence that Iowans would contribute enough to activate the full state match. The state does not have the funds to cover the $45 million in benefits that will be missed if the shutdown continues.
