Ex-West High paraeducator avoids prison time after pleading guilty to sexual exploitation
Joel Munzila, a 23-year-old former paraeducator at Iowa City West High, had his five-year prison sentence suspended after pleading guilty to sexual exploitation of a minor. Arrested in June 2024, Munzila reportedly engaged in sexual acts with a student during school hours, taking her to a nearby residence. Principal Mitch Gross confirmed Munzila's dismissal from the school once the incidents were reported. The court imposed a three-year probation period, after which Munzila will serve a ten-year supervision term under the Iowa Department of Corrections, treated similarly to parole. If Munzila violates any conditions, he risks serving the full five-year sentence.
He is also required to register as a sex offender for at least ten years. A no-contact order between Munzila and the student remains until 2030, as mandated by the court. This case highlights ongoing concerns about the safety and protection of students in educational environments.
