Hey Iowa, did you know you can get a library card at any library in the state?

Iowa City, IALocal News

Iowa residents can obtain library cards from any public library, promoting access to a diverse array of resources. The American Library Association (ALA) launched "Library Card Sign-up Month" to encourage community engagement and exploration of library offerings beyond books. Sam Helmick, ALA president, emphasizes that libraries help build resilient communities, with the Iowa City Public Library averaging 115 visitors per hour and 40,209 cardholders. Amid increasing book bans and funding threats, Helmick urges residents to utilize libraries and recognize the importance of federal and state funding for these resources. Iowa's open access library card system allows residents to check out materials from any participating library, enhancing statewide access.

The ALA actively opposes Executive Order 14238, which aims to dismantle agencies that support libraries and museums. The initiative highlights the need for community members to engage with libraries to ensure their survival and relevance. Libraries are positioned as vital infrastructure for community connection and resilience.
