Sheriff Brad Kunkel drops support for Iowa City, Johnson County law enforcement facility

Iowa City, IALocal News

Sheriff Brad Kunkel has retracted his support for a joint law enforcement facility between Iowa City and Johnson County, stating he no longer sees a viable path forward for the project. In a letter dated September 17, Kunkel informed the Johnson County Board of Supervisors of his decision, emphasizing that a separate facility would better serve the public's interests. This change in stance occurred shortly after a joint meeting where city leaders expressed apprehensions regarding the facility's future. Additionally, it came just after Iowa City narrowly passed a resolution to continue discussions on the joint project, with Mayor Bruce Teague indicating he would not support the proposed site. Kunkel plans to push for a new, county-only facility, aiming for a vote on funding in November 2026.

The Board of Supervisors will ultimately decide the next steps regarding the facility discussions. Kunkel's letter highlighted the necessity of good faith and diligence in addressing significant issues affecting the community. The future of joint law enforcement efforts in the area now hangs in the balance.
