Big Four Ice Caves Collapse Safety Drill

Everett, WALocal News

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a rescue drill on May 27, 2025, at the Big Four Ice Caves to prepare for potential emergencies such as an avalanche or cave collapse. The scenario involves rescuing multiple trapped or injured individuals, necessitating a robust response from both ground and air resources. First responders from various agencies, including Snohomish County Fire District 17 and the U. S. Forest Service, will test communication strategies in the challenging radio environment of the remote area.

The drill will emphasize the importance of coordination among agencies using an incident command system. Safety protocols for helicopter operations will also be highlighted, with designated ground controllers overseeing the exercise. Should inclement weather arise, the drill will be postponed to May 29, 2025. This training serves to enhance preparedness for real emergencies and improve collaboration among first responders. The Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue team will also play a critical role in the exercise.
