Regional Apprenticeship Pathways Program Provides an Alternative to College
The Regional Apprenticeship Pathways (RAP) Program in Snohomish County equips high school students with hands-on training for careers in the building and construction trades, addressing the urgent demand for skilled labor. Since its inception in 2019 at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, RAP has become the only state-recognized pre-apprenticeship program in the area. Developed through collaboration among local employers, education officials, and labor leaders, the program offers a well-rounded curriculum that combines academic knowledge with practical experience. Recent funding from the Washington State Legislature, alongside a $150,000 grant from Snohomish County, has significantly enhanced RAP's training capabilities, including the acquisition of a state-of-the-art heavy machinery simulator. This investment ensures that graduates are equipped with the necessary technical skills and safety knowledge to thrive in their careers.
The program's success has led to its model being replicated in other districts, showcasing its effectiveness in linking education to industry needs. The upcoming Spring Showcase on April 29 will provide an opportunity for the community to engage with the program, see student demonstrations, and learn about the career pathways available in skilled trades. Through continued community support and investment, RAP is shaping the future workforce in the construction trades.
