Snohomish County provides funds to family resource centers, food banks
Snohomish County allocated $300,000 to enhance food access for residents during a federal pause on food assistance programs, effective November 1. The funding includes $200,000 for 10 family resource centers to assist families experiencing interruptions in SNAP benefits, with a focus on older adults. An additional $100,000 will support the Food Coalition, which faces rising demand at food banks. County Executive Dave Somers highlighted the urgency of local support as the federal government remains stalled on funding. Third District Councilmember Strom Peterson described the centers as critical lifelines for families facing food insecurity.
Fourth District Councilmember Jared Mead encouraged residents to seek help from local food banks and to contribute if possible. This initiative aims to help over 77,000 residents who rely on federal assistance for their food needs. The county asserts its commitment to addressing food insecurity while emphasizing the importance of community involvement.
