Mayor Vetoes Controversial Snap Curfew Policy
Mayor Brandon Johnson vetoed a proposed youth curfew ordinance in Chicago that would have allowed police to implement “snap curfews” during anticipated large gatherings of teenagers. The City Council voted 27-22 in favor of the measure, but Johnson deemed it unconstitutional and a potential source of civil rights abuses. He stated that the city has seen a measurable decline in violent crime and emphasized the importance of investing in community safety strategies instead. Alderman Brian Hopkins, who introduced the ordinance, must now secure support from 34 alderpeople to override the veto. He has been in discussions with some who initially opposed the policy but are now uncertain about supporting the veto.
The ordinance required police to provide a 30-minute notice before declaring a curfew, a provision that has faced backlash from community groups. Johnson's administration aims to address youth issues through investments in jobs and mental health care. This situation highlights ongoing tensions between community safety initiatives and concerns about over-policing.
