More Safety Upgrades Coming To Dangerous Stretch Of Pulaski Road In Archer Heights
Construction will commence this summer on safety upgrades to Pulaski Road in Archer Heights, an area notorious for traffic fatalities, having recorded eight deaths since 2019. The Chicago Department of Transportation is implementing various enhancements, including curb extensions, bus bulbs, and raised crosswalks, to improve pedestrian safety. Officials estimate the construction will take about four to six months and recently held a community meeting to share project details. Ald. Jeylú Gutiérrez stressed the importance of these upgrades, citing a recent fatality as a catalyst for action.
Local residents have reported that temporary measures, such as speed bumps and plastic bollards, have already made a significant difference in traffic behavior. In 2024, Pulaski Road recorded 2,755 crashes, resulting in 723 injuries and five fatalities, underscoring the urgency for these improvements. The area has been ranked the second most dangerous street in Chicago by multiple sources. Enhanced safety measures are part of the city's Complete Streets initiative, though Pulaski will not see new bike lanes due to jurisdictional issues.
