City Of Boston Celebrates Construction Start On Final Parcels Of Welcome Home, Boston Phase I
Boston has officially begun construction on the final parcels of Welcome Home, Boston Phase I, which will provide 72 new affordable homes across Dorchester. This initiative is part of Mayor Michelle Wu's strategy to close the racial wealth gap by enhancing homeownership opportunities for residents, particularly BIPOC families. The Erie/Glenway project, which recently broke ground, will deliver nine homes across three buildings. Chief of Housing Sheila A. Dillon highlighted the administration's dedication to increasing homeownership rates through various support programs.
Phase II is already in progress, with new developments planned to bring an additional 72 homes to Roxbury and Mattapan by 2026. This summer, the city unveiled Phase III, which will make 11 new parcels available for redevelopment, targeting first-time, middle-income homebuyers. The program builds on existing resources from the Boston Home Center, which offers assistance for homebuyers. Since Mayor Wu took office, Boston has initiated the construction of over 18,000 new homes, including many income-restricted units.
