Council Backs Fenway Park Workers in Contract Dispute

Boston, MALocal News

The Boston City Council expressed its full support for food and beverage workers at Fenway Park, represented by UNITE HERE Local 26, amid ongoing contract negotiations with Aramark that have extended over eight months. The Council adopted a resolution recognizing the 1,200 workers as essential to the Fenway Park experience and vital contributors to the local economy and tourism. Despite Aramark's reported profit of $1. 4 billion last year, the workers continue to face low wages and increasing job displacement due to automation, particularly with the introduction of self-checkout kiosks. The resolution condemns Aramark's wage practices and automation efforts, asserting that they undermine service quality and compromise the historic character of the ballpark.

The Council emphasized its commitment to protecting workers and deemed their demands for fair wages and job security reasonable. Furthermore, the Council pledged to support the workers by refraining from purchasing food and beverages during any strike. A copy of the resolution will be sent to Aramark's General Manager to ensure the company's awareness of the Council's stance. This action underscores the ongoing tension between labor rights and corporate practices in the hospitality industry.
