Whatcom County finalizes four contractors to design, build new jail in Ferndale

Whatcom County has finalized contracts with four firms to design and build a new jail, set to begin construction in 2026. The design phase will see collaboration between local firm RMC Architects and national firm Nelson Worldwide Architects. For construction, Clark Construction will partner with Bellingham-based RAM Construction, both of which have experience with similar projects in Washington state. County Executive Satpal Sidhu noted the significance of local involvement, stating, “We are confident we have the right team for the job. ” The jail's construction aims to enhance facilities for behavioral health and justice services, addressing community needs.

RMC Architects has previously worked on prominent local buildings, reinforcing their capability in this project. Completion of the new facility is anticipated by summer 2028, reflecting a long-term investment in local infrastructure. This development marks a significant step forward in improving community resources in Whatcom County.
