Family of five to remain in ICE custody in Ferndale, Rep. Rick Larsen calls for action
Congressional leaders are pressing for the release of a Honduran mother and her four U. S. citizen children detained by ICE in Ferndale. Rep. Rick Larsen confirmed that a federal judge issued an emergency restraining order on July 15 to prevent their deportation.
Kenia Jackeline Merlos has been held at the facility since June 28, having lived in the U. S. for nearly 20 years. Rep. Maxine Dexter, who visited the detention center, emphasized the need for the family to have access to legal representation.
The representatives' letter to the Department of Homeland Security highlighted that Merlos holds a valid work permit and has not faced criminal charges. Merlos's immigration documents are still pending with federal authorities, raising concerns about the processing of such cases. This incident reflects ongoing debates about immigration policies and the treatment of families in detention. Lawmakers continue to advocate for changes to ensure fair treatment for individuals in similar situations.
