Learn about Woodpeckers of Washington at free event on Wednesday, May 21

Soos Creek Botanical Garden will host a free educational talk on woodpeckers on May 21, from 12:30 to 2 p. m. The event features master birder and author Connie Sidles, who will discuss all 13 species of woodpeckers present in Washington. Sidles highlights the colorful and charismatic nature of these birds, noting their critical role in local ecosystems. Participants will learn about woodpecker behavior, including their unique communication methods and feeding habits, which involve pecking into solid wood up to 20 times a second.

This initiative is part of the Garden’s “Pavilion by the Pond” program, aimed at fostering a deeper connection between the community and nature. The event is free and intended for all ages, promoting wildlife appreciation among attendees. The garden is located at 29308 132nd Avenue SE in Auburn.
