King County launches campaign to reduce fatal crashes on high-risk corridor

Auburn, WALocal News

In response to a surge in fatal and serious crashes, the King County Target Zero Coalition has launched a traffic safety campaign targeting risky driving behaviors on a hazardous 11-mile corridor connecting Renton, Kent, and Auburn. This initiative is underpinned by community insights and a study that highlights the need for safety improvements in the area. Key components of the campaign include implementing teen driver safety programs, conducting high-visibility speed enforcement, and launching educational outreach efforts to inform the public about the risks associated with speeding and impaired driving. The initiative is shaped by the experiences of families affected by traffic fatalities, such as the Coury family, who lost their son Gabriel in a crash involving an impaired driver. Target Zero Manager Sara Hallstead noted the program's data-driven focus, utilizing insights from law enforcement and community engagement to address specific driving behaviors contributing to accidents.

The campaign aims to foster safer streets through collaboration and targeted enforcement efforts. Community engagement events are scheduled to further involve the public and gather feedback on the campaign's effectiveness. For more details, residents are encouraged to visit the King County Target Zero website.
