Auburn Raises LGBTQ Pride Flag at City Hall

Auburn, WALocal News

Auburn raised the LGBTQ+ pride flag for the second consecutive year at city hall, celebrating Pride Month and the LGBTQ+ community. Mayor Nancy Backus and her daughter, Lucky, initiated the tradition in 2020, and this year's event included speeches, prayers, and personal testimonies. Among the attendees were Auburn City Council members and representatives from various organizations, highlighting community support. Backus expressed hopes for expanded future events, including a potential Pride Parade, to further engage with local LGBTQ+ organizations. The pride flag, which symbolizes diversity and acceptance, was first created in 1978 and has undergone changes over the years.

It serves not only as a celebration but also as a healing moment for individuals who have faced discrimination. Personal stories shared during the event emphasized the importance of love and acceptance in overcoming adversity. The city's commitment to recognizing LGBTQ+ pride reflects a growing inclusivity within the community.
