A Washington State Patrol airplane, dubbed “Smokey,” played a crucial role in capturing a motorcyclist speeding at 96 MPH in a 60 MPH zone on SR 167 in Auburn. The pursuit unfolded early on August 3, 2025, when troopers attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The rider fled, prompting a chase through Auburn, Federal Way, and the Lake Tapps area. After abandoning his motorcycle in a garage and switching to another vehicle, he was spotted by a trooper who recognized his description. Authorities arrested the suspect for DUI and attempting to elude police, emphasizing the importance of aerial support in high-speed pursuits.

The motorcycle was seized to serve as evidence in the ongoing investigation. Washington State Patrol has increasingly relied on aerial surveillance to enhance traffic enforcement. The incident underscores the growing use of technology in law enforcement efforts.
