Auburn Police Officer awarded Medal of Merit Recognition for saving suicidal woman

Auburn, WALocal News

Officer Ali of the Auburn Police Department was awarded the Medal of Merit Recognition for his courageous actions on June 19, 2025, during a critical incident involving a woman in distress. The woman was reportedly crying and threatening suicide while perched on a bridge, 30–40 feet above the ground. Ali approached her quietly to minimize the risk of alarming her, demonstrating exceptional professionalism and compassion. Body-worn camera footage captured her heartbreaking plea, "Please let me die," moments before he safely pulled her back from the edge. Assistant Chief Sam Betz highlighted that Ali's swift intervention likely saved the woman's life, as she might have jumped without his presence.

The award was conferred on July 9, celebrating Ali's commitment to public safety and mental health advocacy. This incident underscores the critical role law enforcement plays in crisis intervention and mental health support. The Auburn Police Department continues to emphasize the importance of training officers to handle such delicate situations effectively.
