Scott Schaefer, founder and editor of South King Media, won first place in the Feature (Soft News) – Small category at the SPJ 2024 Region 10 Excellence in Journalism Awards for his video story honoring retiring postal carrier Tricia Hanley. The video captured a heartfelt farewell from Burien residents as Hanley completed her final delivery on October 4, 2024, after 30 years of dedicated service in the Three Tree Point neighborhood. Judges commended the piece for its emotional portrayal, calling it an “adorable tribute” that resonated with the community. Schaefer expressed pride in being recognized again, stating that the award reflects the importance of local journalism in telling everyday stories. This recognition contributes to South King Media's growing list of accolades for its hyperlocal news coverage, emphasizing the impact of community-focused reporting.

The organization also earned a second-place award in the General Excellence Writing – Small category at the same event. Schaefer's work underscores the value of authentic storytelling and public appreciation for everyday workers.
