Bowser Administration Announces Updates to the Districts Heat Plan

Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration has revised the District’s Heat Plan to improve safety amid rising temperatures. The DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency will issue "heat alerts" when temperatures reach 95 degrees and "extreme heat alerts" at 105 degrees. These alerts will trigger the opening of cooling centers and enhanced public messaging via AlertDC and social media. Residents are encouraged to sign up for AlertDC to receive critical updates during heat events. Cooling centers will be available at various locations, including public libraries and community centers, offering respite and additional support services.

High heat can exacerbate medical conditions, making vulnerable populations particularly at risk. Residents should check on seniors and those without shelter to ensure their safety. The updated plan reflects a proactive approach to safeguarding public health during extreme heat conditions.
