Mayor Muriel Bowser activated a Heat Alert for June 18 and 19, anticipating high temperatures and humidity in Washington, DC. The National Weather Service forecasts air temperatures reaching the upper 80s and lower 90s, with heat indices possibly exceeding 95 degrees. As part of the response, spray parks and select recreation centers will be available for cooling on Juneteenth. Residents are advised to stay indoors, maintain hydration, and check on vulnerable neighbors during the heat. The District also opens cooling centers where individuals can seek relief, and a hotline is available for transportation to these centers.

Low-barrier shelters and day centers will operate year-round, providing safe, air-conditioned spaces for individuals experiencing homelessness.
