Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws

Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025, aimed at strengthening enforcement and accountability tools for juveniles in Washington, D. C. The proposed changes include adjusting curfew hours to 11 PM for July and August 2025 and extending the curfew to include 17-year-olds. Councilmember Brooke Pinto highlighted the importance of creating safe recreational spaces while also equipping the Chief of Police with the authority to establish earlier curfews in specific areas if needed. The legislation arises from concerning trends of violence among youth gatherings across the city, including incidents in the Wharf and Dupont Circle.

Previously, the Metropolitan Police Department utilized limited methods to manage juvenile conduct but faced challenges in effectively addressing disturbances. The new amendment aims to empower law enforcement with more flexible tools to prevent violence and ensure public safety. Mayor Bowser has expressed readiness to adjust the District’s public safety measures in light of recent juvenile disturbances. The Council is set to review the legislation during its July 1 meeting.
