Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws
Mayor Muriel Bowser unveiled the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 to address rising violence among juveniles in Washington, DC. The proposed legislation aims to change curfew hours to 11 PM during July and August and extend curfew regulations to include 17-year-olds. It also authorizes the Chief of Police to create extended curfew zones, which can begin at 7 PM for up to 30 days based on public safety needs. Councilmember Brooke Pinto highlighted the dual focus on providing safe recreational spaces and empowering law enforcement to act against potential violence. The changes come in response to recent disturbances in areas like the Wharf and Dupont Circle.
MPD has increased its presence in neighborhoods to curb negative behaviors among youth. The legislation will be submitted for consideration during the Council's July 1 meeting. This proactive approach aims to enhance community safety while addressing juvenile behavior effectively.
