Burnaby residents call for pause in proposed shelter project
Burnaby residents are calling on the provincial government to pause plans for a shelter at 3020 Gilmore Diversion, which will feature 80 semi-private sleeping pods. Hundreds have signed a petition expressing safety concerns and criticizing the lack of community input regarding the project. BC Housing claims the shelter will provide secure spaces and connect guests to essential services, yet locals question the decision-making process. Some residents argue that the area, home to many families and seniors, is not appropriate for such a facility. Conversely, supporters believe the shelter will positively impact outreach efforts.
According to the City of Burnaby, the new shelter aligns with their Housing and Homelessness Strategy and responds to the closure of the nearby Douglas Road Shelter. The city intends to increase bylaw and sanitation patrols in the area to mitigate potential issues as they arise. An online information session is scheduled for May 7th, ahead of the shelter's expected opening in spring 2026.
