Vancouvers Jericho Lands development moves forward
Vancouver city council approved a major development project for the Jericho Lands, which will introduce 13,000 affordable housing units in 60 buildings. The proposal includes structures reaching up to 49 storeys, as well as schools, parks, and retail spaces, aiming to revitalize the West Point Grey neighbourhood. Seven councillors supported the project, while four, including Mayor Ken Sim, were absent during the vote. The initiative, led by the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ Nations in partnership with Canada Lands Company, is projected to take 25 years to complete. Public hearings revealed a mix of support and opposition, leading to a delayed decision by the council.
The initial concept plan, released in 2021, emphasized affordable housing, green spaces, and employment opportunities. If approved, the first units might open within seven years, marking a significant shift in the area’s development landscape. This project represents a collaborative effort to address housing shortages in Vancouver while enhancing community amenities.
