B.C. govt providing 5 million for accessible playgrounds
The B. C. Ministry of Infrastructure will allocate an extra $200,000 to 25 school districts for the construction of accessible playgrounds in 2025. Bowinn Ma, the minister of infrastructure, stated that creating safe play areas is vital for community well-being. Minister of Education and Child Care Lisa Beare noted that playgrounds help children build friendships and confidence.
The NDP government has previously invested $45 million over six years in over 300 schools, resulting in new playgrounds that have benefited more than 77,000 students. Since 2017, the province has also approved over $6 billion for various school capital projects, including seismic upgrades. These investments have created nearly 43,000 new student spaces by purchasing almost 30 properties for future school sites. The new funding initiative underscores the government's ongoing commitment to inclusive education and community development. Ensuring accessible play spaces will foster a healthier environment for children and families across British Columbia.
