Hospitality association joins calls to move SROs away from Granville Entertainment District

Business owners on Granville Street have reported heightened violence and disturbances linked to three supportive housing buildings in the area. The Hospitality Vancouver Association contends that placing individuals with mental health and addiction issues in the entertainment district has been a dismal failure. Cabana Nightclub owner Dave Kershaw revealed that his establishment has suffered over 100 floods and multiple fire incidents, leading to losses exceeding six figures. The Ministry of Housing has recognized these ongoing challenges and is developing plans to phase out the SROs while prioritizing safe housing for vulnerable tenants. Vancouver Police Department Chief Steve Rai emphasized that the root causes of these social issues extend beyond police control, yet they remain committed to improving neighborhood safety.

Since 2020, emergency services have responded to more than 6,600 calls related to the three SROs. The community is grappling with the need for effective solutions that address both safety concerns and the support of vulnerable populations. This situation highlights the complexities of urban policy in addressing homelessness and public safety.
