B.C. companies developing wildfire-fighting drones

Vancouver, BCLocal News

Fireswarm Solutions and Strategic Natural Resource Group are pioneering a drone initiative to bolster wildfire-fighting efforts in British Columbia, with plans to deploy these unmanned aircraft by the 2026 fire season. Each drone is designed to carry up to 400 kilograms of water, significantly aiding in the fight against fires in remote and hazardous areas. CEO Alex Deslauriers notes that one operator can control multiple drones simultaneously, enhancing operational efficiency over traditional helicopter methods. The cost-effectiveness of these drones, which are built solely for carrying loads, is a key advantage, as they can operate at a fraction of the hourly cost of helicopters. Domenico Iannidinardo, CEO of Strategic Natural Resource Group, points out that the drones can tackle fires at any time, even at night when temperatures drop.

The initiative is seen as a necessary enhancement, given the increasing strain on current firefighting resources. Both leaders stress that this technology will not replace existing helicopter services but will serve as a vital supplement. Their commitment to advancing this technology reflects a proactive approach to addressing the growing challenges posed by wildfires in the region.
