City to trial one-way vehicle circulation on Canada Place for peak cruise ship season
The City of Vancouver is launching a pilot program for one-way vehicle circulation at Canada Place ahead of the peak spring and summer cruise ship season, which sees over 1. 2 million passengers annually. This initiative aims to significantly enhance pedestrian safety by reducing conflict points between pedestrians and vehicles in this busy area. Motorists will access the one-way zone via Howe Street, exiting at either Burrard or Thurlow Street, which is expected to improve traffic flow for taxis, tour buses, and other vehicles. In addition to this new traffic pattern, the City has recently completed major sidewalk repairs at 200 Howe Street to bolster public safety.
The pilot will be closely monitored in partnership with key stakeholders, including the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and the Vancouver Convention Centre. If successful, the one-way circulation could become a permanent change, reflecting the City's ongoing commitment to improving the pedestrian experience. Signage and road paint will be installed in advance to inform motorists of the new traffic flow. This proactive approach underscores the importance of safety and efficiency in accommodating the influx of cruise ship passengers.
