City of Vancouver delivers new 69-space childcare facility in South Vancouver

Vancouver, BCLocal News

The City of Vancouver has celebrated the opening of a new 69-space childcare facility in the Marpole neighbourhood, a significant addition aimed at alleviating the childcare crisis in the region. This not-for-profit centre, developed in partnership with the Province of British Columbia and the Government of Canada, received $3 million from the ChildCareBC's New Spaces Fund and $6. 3 million from City contributions. The facility will accommodate infants, toddlers, and children aged three to five, providing essential support to families in the area. It is part of a broader initiative that leverages the City’s innovative co-location model, placing childcare on top of new and replacement schools for greater accessibility.

Mayor Ken Sim noted that less than half of families needing childcare in Vancouver currently find it, underscoring the facility’s importance. This project supports Vancouver’s 10-Year Childcare Strategy, which aims to ensure that quality childcare is available to all families in need. By partnering with Marpole Neighbourhood House, the City is fostering community relationships and connecting childcare with social programs. The centre aims to serve as a 'one-stop hub' for families, contributing to the city's goal of creating a healthier environment for all residents.
