Mother of Lapu-Lapu Day victim says they have been forgotten

Vancouver, BCLocal News

Jhosie Sico, mother of AJ Sico, a victim of the Lapu-Lapu Day tragedy, highlights the ongoing neglect faced by families affected by the April 26 incident that killed 11 people. In her first interview with OMNI News, Sico expresses disappointment over insufficient financial aid for her son, who is still in critical condition. She criticizes Filipino BC, the organizer of the block party, for limiting assistance to a 90-day mandate, calling it "a slap on our face. " The United Way BC reports that the Kapwa Strong Fund has raised over $2 million, distributed to more than 40 charities providing urgent and long-term support. Sico argues that if fundraising continues for the tragedy, it should not occur without ensuring victims receive adequate help.

She shares her hope for AJ's recovery, stating, "Each day that AJ is in good spirits is already a miracle. " Despite the challenges of an altered Christmas, Sico's love for her son fuels her determination to advocate for all victims. The situation underscores the need for sustainable support for those affected by the tragedy.
