VFRS responds to record number of overdoses in one day

Vancouver, BCLocal News

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) recorded an unprecedented 54 overdose responses on November 21, 2025, breaking its previous single-day record. Captain Matt Trudeau expressed concern over the emotional impact these responses have on firefighters and the community, highlighting that the average number of daily overdose reports has risen to 20 to 25 in 2024. He recounted a troubling incident involving an overdose from a combination of fentanyl and another potent substance. In response to the mental health challenges posed by these emergencies, firefighters at Firehall 2 are limited to 81 shifts. The number of emergency calls at Firehall 2 surged to 452 last week, a significant increase from 229 during the same time last year.

The ongoing opioid crisis in British Columbia continues to affect families and first responders daily. The VFRS aims to address the strain on its crews while responding to the needs of the community. With these rising numbers, the department emphasizes the critical need for support and resources to manage the crisis effectively.
