Costs for PNE Amphitheatre renewal jumps to triple original estimates

Vancouver, BCLocal News

Vancouver City Council approved a $46. 16 million budget increase for the PNE Amphitheatre, bringing the total cost to $183 million, nearly triple the original estimate of just under $65 million. The council had previously approved this budget adjustment in May during an in-camera meeting, which was disclosed only after updated financial details were posted in October. The new amphitheatre, still under construction, is set to host the FIFA World Cup Fan Fest in June 2026, prompting the approval of additional funding to meet the deadline. The first budget increase in 2023 was due to the relocation of an underground pipe and unexpected archaeological work.

During construction, workers unearthed weapons, including a German Howitzer and machine guns, dating back to the First World War, which were later returned to the Canadian Armed Forces. The budget increases highlight the complexities and challenges of large-scale infrastructure projects. These developments have significant implications for the city's event hosting capabilities and tourism. Funding adjustments reflect the need to accommodate unforeseen circumstances in public works.
