Restaurant warns of scam targeting businesses using food delivery apps

Vancouver, BCLocal News

Scammers are increasingly targeting restaurants that rely on food delivery apps, posing as representatives to gain access to sensitive account information. Roman Jowkari of MoMo Donair received a call from a scammer who claimed to represent Uber Eats, prompting his father to share login details. His son, Mohammad, a cybersecurity student, recognized the scam when asked for a two-step authentication code. Such scams can severely impact small businesses by altering payout information and diverting customer funds, with some restaurants depending on delivery apps for nearly half of their revenue. After changing their account details, the Jowkaris continued to receive calls from other scammers attempting to exploit their account.

Mohammad reported similar incidents affecting businesses in the Lonsdale and Marine Drive areas. Uber Eats has urged merchants to stay alert, emphasizing that they will never ask for personal information via calls, texts, or emails. The Jowkaris aim to raise awareness to help others avoid falling victim to these scams.
