Seals swarm White Rock in rarely observed natural phenomenon
In a rare occurrence, up to 200 harbour seals have gathered off the White Rock pier, a behaviour not previously documented in the area. Marine biologist Dr. Cindy Elliser highlights the unusual nature of this phenomenon, noting groups of 90 seals observed together. Local resident Norman Orr, who has lived in the area for 40 years, recalls experiencing this event only a few times. Resident Suzanne Sevigny has been tracking the growing seal population, reporting pods of up to 95 seals.
Retired fisherman Mitch George notes that such activity is typically seen far from White Rock. The presence of seals, along with sea lions and various bird species, enhances local biodiversity and draws interest from the community. Elliser emphasizes the importance of community observation for researchers, who can benefit from increased data collection. The unique behaviour of these harbour seals raises questions about marine ecosystems and food sources in Semiahmoo Bay.
