West Vancouver street reopens after structure fire some residents remain displaced

Vancouver, BCLocal News

Emergency crews reopened 15th Street at Esquimalt Avenue in West Vancouver following a structure fire in an apartment building on Thursday evening. Firefighters arrived shortly before 5 p. m. to find heavy black smoke and high heat conditions on the second floor, where they successfully extinguished the fire. A neighbor had already evacuated the resident of the affected unit, who sustained a minor injury while escaping.

While some residents have been allowed to return home, others remain displaced, with the District of West Vancouver acknowledging at least seven units requiring temporary accommodation. BC Housing is coordinating fire watch through a security company to ensure safety in the area. North Shore Emergency Management is on site evaluating the needs of displaced residents, particularly those with mobility or medical challenges. The incident underscores the importance of community preparedness in the face of emergencies and the support systems in place for vulnerable residents. Authorities continue to monitor the situation to provide necessary assistance to those affected.
