Non-profit rejects Vancouver mayors proposal for Filipino cultural centre
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim announced plans for a Filipino cultural center downtown, which has faced opposition from the Mabuhay House Society (MHS). MHS criticized the proposal for lacking a clear governance plan and adequate community consultation, raising concerns about potential duplication of efforts. Vice Chair Rudy Antonio highlighted unresolved property issues at the proposed site and insisted that the community's voice is essential in shaping such initiatives. Sim argued the opportunity to establish the center was too significant to overlook, likening it to the multiple benevolent societies in Chinatown. The Filipino Legacy Society would manage the center, which has led some established organizations to feel excluded.
MHS has warned that the city has not addressed its concerns or the results of a community questionnaire. The society urges that no project moves forward without legal clarity and community engagement. Sim's motion is scheduled for a council review later this month, indicating a pivotal moment for the Filipino community in Vancouver.
