Officials to hold public meeting after Kamloops Lake derailment fuel spill
A public meeting will occur on Monday evening in Savona for residents impacted by a train derailment that spilled 70,536 liters of jet fuel into Kamloops Lake. The derailment, which took place on November 1, involved two cars filled with aviation fuel. Cleanup operations, coordinated by Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), include removing rail cars, assessing shorelines, and conducting water sample tests. All sampling results thus far have remained below the BC Source Drinking Water Guidelines, according to CPKC. Interior Health Authority has recommended that local residents use alternative water sources to avoid potential contamination risks.
The health authority is collaborating with CPKC to implement a thorough water sampling strategy. The meeting will feature representatives from CPKC, the ministry, and health authorities, who will provide updates on the situation. This incident highlights the need for effective emergency response protocols in cases of environmental hazards.
