Crisis Centre BC calls for govt to explore mental health integration with 911
Crisis Centre BC is pushing for the integration of mental health crisis lines into B. C. 's 911 system, aiming to create a fourth option for those in crisis. Director Jeffrey Preiss states that this change would enhance access to mental health and suicide prevention services, allowing for immediate support without relying solely on police intervention. Currently, E-Comm can only send police to callers indicating a mental health crisis.
The center emphasizes the importance of sustainable funding to develop a continuum of care that effectively addresses these crises. Executive Director Stacy Ashton believes B. C. could set a national standard for mental health crisis response. The Ministry of Public Safety acknowledges the necessity of a financially viable model before any changes to 911 services can be made.
They also point out that not all British Columbians are served by E-Comm, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach to the integration process. A thorough analysis of funding options will be conducted to ensure equity across the province.
