RCMP, CFIA confirm cull of B.C. ostrich farm complete

Vancouver, BCLocal News

The RCMP confirmed the completion of a cull of approximately 300 ostriches at a farm in Edgewood, B. C. , on Thursday, following a Supreme Court ruling that allowed the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to proceed with the operation. This decision came after more than 10 months of legal battles over an order related to an avian flu outbreak that had already killed 70 birds. The CFIA emphasized that the cull was necessary due to the potential risk of healthy-appearing birds harboring the virus and increasing mutation risks.

Despite the owners' claims of herd immunity and the flock's value for scientific research, the agency refused their request for testing. The RCMP maintained public safety during the cull, blocking access to the area and confirming no injuries occurred. Following the cull, CFIA representatives began the disposal stage while the premises remained quarantined under the Health of Animals Act. Supporters gathered nearby, protesting against the cull and demanding intervention as gunshots were heard. The CFIA reminded the public that obstructing their operations is illegal, and airspace above the farm has been restricted.
