HWY 1 through Burnaby closing Saturday, Sunday for pedestrian overpass construction
A five-kilometre stretch of Highway One in Burnaby will close this weekend to facilitate the construction of a pedestrian overpass. Starting Saturday at noon, lane closures will begin, with full closure in both directions commencing at 8 p. m. The City of Burnaby has reported that the overpass will create a safe crossing between Burnaby Lake and Deer Lake, linking important regional trails and amenities. Traffic anchor Alex Carrigan warns that the timing of the closure coincides with a busy weekend filled with events, such as a Vancouver Canucks game and several concerts.
As a result, drivers heading back into Vancouver and surrounding areas may face unexpected detours. DriveBC suggests Lougheed Highway as an alternate route to mitigate traffic congestion. Construction began in 2023, with an expected completion time of three years. The highway will reopen Sunday at 6 a. m.
, minimizing disruption to weekend travelers.
