Vaping among young people is reaching epidemic levels BC Lung Foundation
A new study from the McCreary Centre Society found that 69% of British Columbians aged 12 to 19 have never vaped, with 87% citing health concerns and 85% expressing a lack of interest. However, experts, including Christopher Lam of the BC Lung Foundation, warn that vaping among youth is escalating to epidemic levels, with children starting as young as 10. The study reveals that 66% of youth who vape have done so in the past month, and many use other nicotine products as well. Lam emphasizes the alarming trend of flavored vaping products, which are designed to appeal to younger users. He also points out that the new vaping technology makes devices difficult to detect in schools, complicating efforts to address the issue.
The BC Lung Foundation is calling for stricter regulations and educational initiatives to combat the rising trend of youth vaping. This situation poses significant risks to developing brains and overall youth health. Immediate action is necessary to prevent further normalization of vaping among young people.
