Vancouver Joins Global Initiatives to Address Extreme Heat and Build Climate-Resilient Communities
Vancouver has joined the C40 Cool Cities Accelerator to tackle extreme heat, which is the deadliest weather-related hazard, causing approximately 489,000 deaths each year. Mayor Ken Sim praised the partnership, stating it helps make Vancouver greener and safer. The initiative will focus on strengthening early warning systems and updating building codes to mitigate heat risks. C40’s Executive Director Mark Watts emphasized the alarming 54% increase in days above 35°C in major cities over the past twenty years. Vancouver's commitment aligns with the UN Secretary-General’s climate action call, showcasing its leadership in urban climate resilience.
Additionally, Vancouver is involved in the Urban Planning Accelerator, aiming for climate-responsive urban development by 2035. The city implements its sustainability goals through the Vancouver Plan and Official Development Plan's Three Big Ideas, which include equitable housing and climate protection. Vancouver collaborates with a diverse group of cities representing over 143 million people to create thriving, climate-resilient communities.
