Thousands of litres of drug chemicals from China seized by Canadian border officers
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) seized 4,300 litres of chemicals associated with the production of illicit drugs from two shipments originating in China. Officers discovered the substances at the Tsawwassen Container Examination Facility, with the shipments intended for Calgary. Among the seized items were 3,600 litres of 1,4 Butanediol, a precursor for GHB, and 500 litres of propionyl chloride, a known fentanyl precursor. In the three months ending in August, the CBSA recorded 12,193 seizures, which encompassed a range of illegal items, including drugs, firearms, and over $9 million in cash. This operation reflects the agency's ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and the opioid crisis in Canada.
The alarming amount of these chemicals highlights the persistent threat of illicit drug production. The CBSA continues to prioritize public safety through stringent border controls. These seizures may lead to further investigations into drug trafficking networks operating in Canada.
