Metro Vancouver power outages Over 1,200 in the dark due to storm

Vancouver, BCLocal News

A powerful storm has left thousands without power in Metro Vancouver, particularly affecting over 1,200 customers. BC Hydro reported 22 outages impacting 2,783 customers across the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast as of 10 a. m. on Friday. Winds gusting up to 80 km/h and heavy rainfall, with totals reaching 40 mm in elevated areas, have led to downed trees and hazardous driving conditions.

A significant outage affecting 1,160 customers near Nanaimo Street has persisted since 8 a. m. Crews are working to investigate outages in other areas, including Chilliwack and near UBC. Drivers face challenges with reduced visibility and poor traction due to fallen leaves and pooling water. The storm's impact on power infrastructure underscores the vulnerability of the region to severe weather events.

Forecasts indicate winds will ease later today as the storm moves into the province's interior.
