VPD 'Insufficient evidence' to conclude city building inspectors taking bribes
The Vancouver Police Department concluded its investigation into allegations of bribery against city building inspectors, citing insufficient evidence to support charges. Auditor General Mike Macdonell referred the case to police after discovering during interviews that city employees reported instances of “bribes and hospitality” being offered to inspectors. While Macdonell's team did not find evidence of bribes being accepted, they uncovered an inspector who had a conflict of interest due to ownership in a private sector business. The VPD stated there was no significant likelihood of a criminal conviction and would not continue the investigation. Macdonell recommended that the city establish a reporting system to better manage and mitigate such allegations in the future.
The inspector involved had previously given preferential treatment to contractors without making any unfavorable decisions. Detailed analysis showed an unusual decision-making pattern compared to other inspectors. The inspector has since left their position within the city.
