Suspect charged with murder of 21-year-old after 2024 shooting in Coquitlam

A 24-year-old man faces a first-degree murder charge after a shooting incident in Coquitlam that resulted in the death of a 21-year-old on January 26, 2024. The shooting occurred at 4 p. m. near Westwood Street and Glen Drive, a busy intersection. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) reported that two suspects fled the scene, prompting an immediate investigation.

Following the incident, IHIT arrested the suspect, emphasizing the alarming rise in gang violence in the area. "Any time organized criminals operate and bring their violence to communities, it demonstrates their disregard for the safety of others," said Sgt. Freda Fong. The victim was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. This incident follows two other shootings in Coquitlam within the same week, raising community concerns.

Authorities are actively working to enhance their response to gang-related crime to ensure public safety.
