Death of SFU janitor amplifies calls for better working conditions
Kulbir Kaila, a 61-year-old janitor at SFU, died on July 28, 2025, reportedly from a heart attack linked to job-related stress. Her family expressed concerns about the overwhelming workload she faced, which they believe contributed to her health issues. A memorial service highlighted the need for better working conditions for custodial staff, particularly among low-wage, racialized women and immigrants. Enda Brophy from Contract Workers Justice highlighted the physical demands of custodial work, worsened by budget cuts at SFU last year. Colleagues, including cleaner Aruna Sharma, noted that Kaila frequently expressed pressure from her job.
SFU committed to cooperating with the ongoing investigations by WorkSafe and the BC Coroner's office. In response, BEST, the cleaning contractor, announced it would adjust workloads and schedules to prevent employee overwork. This incident underscores the urgent need for policy changes to protect vulnerable workers in custodial positions.
